Reiek Tlang Trek Quick Guide

Reiek Tlang offers two short and easy hiking trails. About 200 m from the drop-off point, the trail splits into two.

  • Continuing straight for around 500 m leads to the Reiek Tlang sunrise viewpoint.
  • Turning right leads to a 1 km trail to Reiek Tlang Peak and further toward Ngai Tlang.

Along the trail to Reiek Tlang Peak, there is a diversion marked as Reiek Tlang Mini Cave. We followed this trail for nearly 400 m beyond the marked point but couldn’t find the cave.

Further ahead on the main trail, we spotted the peak of the Ngai Tlang hike after the Reiek Tlang peak. Since we had planned to hike Ngai Tlang separately, we turned back from here.

The total distance is around 3.5 km, with an elevation gain of 300 m, and it usually takes about 60–90 minutes to complete, depending on which trail you take and whether you continue toward Ngai Tlang.

We started early at 3:30 am from Aizawl to catch the sunrise and reached the entrance gates by 5 am. There are a couple of small restaurants and a toilet facility here.

Reiek Tlang sunrise viewpoint

The straight trail from the drop-off point leads to a campsite area where visitors set up tents and campfires for overnight stays. This is the best spot to catch the sunrise, with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the sun rising spectacularly from the horizon below.

Visibility can vary depending on the season. During our visit, the air was hazy due to the jhum season, so we only caught glimpses of the sun once it had risen above the hills.

Jhum cultivation in Mizoram

Jhum cultivation is a traditional shifting farming practice in Mizoram where forest land is cleared and burned before planting crops. It is usually carried out before the monsoon season between February and April. The burning releases smoke and fine particles, which temporarily worsens air quality across Aizawl and nearby regions.

The Reiek Tlang Peak

Walking back from the sunset view point, we caught sight of a signboard pointing us to the Reiek Tlang Peak. It led to a long ridge walk that was a mix of paved paths (that reminded us of the David Scott Trek), mud trails and steps.

The trail runs along the spine of the mountain, with lush greenery on one side and valley views on the other, making it a very scenic walk.

About 300 m ahead, we noticed another diversion leading toward the Reiek Tlang Mini Cave. We followed it for about 400 m but the mini cave was nowhere to be found. We turned back as the trail began descending toward the base.

Reiek Tlang to Ngai Tlang trek

Note that the trail does not end here. If you continue further, you’ll see two green dustbins marking the summit of Ngai Tlang. And as we found out later on the Ngai Tlang hike to Reiek Tlang, the trail does continue beyond Reiek Tlang and eventually connects to Ngai Tlang, forming a long ridge walk.

After spending some time enjoying the beautiful morning, with mountains all around and the golden sun slowly rising, we headed back to the drop-off point. From here, a dedicated local taxi took us back to the entry gates from where we boarded our taxi, had a delicious breakfast at Gunner’s Inn Restaurant, and then headed over to Ngai Tlang.
