Planning a trip to Mizoram? If you’re an Indian citizen from outside the state, you’ll need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Mizoram.
The process is fairly straightforward, but there’s an important detail to know: the Temporary ILP is valid for only 7 days. If you’re planning a longer trip, you can apply for another ILP before your current one expires.
We spent a long time in Aizawl and applied for ILPs multiple times during our stay. Based on our experience, this guide covers the documents required, how to apply for the Mizoram ILP online, how to pay the fee and how to extend your stay beyond 7 days.
Types of Inner Line Permits (ILPs) in Mizoram
The official Government of Mizoram portal offers two types of ILPs for tourists:
- Temporary ILP: valid for 7 days
- Temporary Stay Permit: valid 30 days
Although the Temporary Stay Permit allows you to select “Tourism” as the application type, our application was rejected with the message: “Does not apply for tourism. Please apply for Temporary ILP“. So apply for the Temporary ILP for both short and long term stays.
How to apply for a Temporary ILP for Mizoram
Documents required for Mizoram ILP Online
- Identification Document (any one):
- EPIC (Voter ID)
- Aadhaar
- PAN
- Passport
- Passport Size Photograph
- Tourism Verification Document (any one):
- Return ticket
- Tour operator itinerary
- Visa (for foreign tourists)
- Other Supporting Documents (optional)
You’ll also need the contact details of a local resident in Mizoram, as this is a required field in the ILP application.
When to submit application for Mizoram ILP
According to the official portal, “Applications may be submitted 7 days or less before the date of entry“. This means that if you’re planning to visit on the 7th, you can start applying from the 1st onwards.
Step-by-Step Guide to Apply for Mizoram ILP Online
1. Open the Mizoram ILP Portal
Click on Government of Mizoram ILP portal, and click on “Apply Temporary ILP”. You will be redirected to the form to fill up ILP details.
2. Fill in your details and submit
In the Application Detail section, select Type as “Tourism”. Fill in all the details, upload the required documents, and click on “Submit Application”.
Once submitted, the portal will generate an application reference number, which will also be sent to your provided mobile number via SMS.
SMS: “ILP: Application submitted successfully. Ref No: 3261234343~ DoICT”
3. If ILP is approved: Make the ILP payment
The application is usually verified within one working day, and if successful, you will receive a confirmation SMS like this: “ILP: Application fee payment pending. Ref No: 3261234343 ~ DoICT”.
Now click on “Fee Payment and Download Pass”. Enter your reference number and click on “Search”.
Your application will be displayed along with the total fee of ₹350 (₹361 if paying via UPI, including transaction charges). Then, click on “Make Payment”.
4. Download ILP
Once payment is complete, click on “Download Pass” to download your ILP.
How to extend Mizoram ILP beyond 7 days
There is currently no separate renewal process, each extension is treated as a new ILP application. Therefore, extending your Mizoram ILP is simple, as the process is the same as applying for a new one. Before your current ILP expires, just apply again for your new dates. We repeated this process four times without any issues.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my ILP extension gets rejected while I am still in Mizoram?
To avoid staying illegally, always apply for your next 7-day Temporary ILP 2 to 3 days before your current one expires. If a technical error occurs, you will need to visit the District Magistrate’s office in Aizawl immediately.
Do I need a physical printout of the Mizoram ILP?
While a PDF on your phone is usually accepted at the Lengpui Airport and check posts, it is highly recommended to keep at least one physical printout with you, as network connectivity can be unpredictable in rural areas of the state.
Whose contact details should I provide if I don’t know any local residents in Mizoram?
If you are traveling independently, you can provide the name, phone number, and address of the hotel or homestay you have booked for your first night in Aizawl.
